Yet Another Related Posts Plugin: Worth a Look

I have been using the Related Entries plugin for almost two years. I liked it because it was light and accomplished the task it was supposed to.

Lately, however, I started taking a look at the Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP), and it looks promising.

yet another related posts plugin

The advantage of this plugin over the other “related posts” alternatives are the advanced features, including:

  • The ability to set a threshold on the relevancy of the posts that you want to show
  • Improved algorithm for finding related posts that also takes into consideration categories and tags
  • The ability to display the related posts in your RSS feed as well
  • The automatic integration of the related links below your posts

If you are trying to find a plugin to add related posts on your blog, therefore, I would highly recommend taking trying this one first.

Even if you already have a plugin doing that, it could be the case of making the switch. I plan to when I get some free time.

On the Drawing Board- 10/28/08

On the Drawing Board- 10/28/08

Just a few jobs going right now. I’m just getting into the final work on my part of the “MAD 20″, AKA “MAD’s 20 Dumbest People, Events and Things of 2008″. It should come as no surprise that one of the subjects of this year’s “MAD 20″ is the credit crisis, and that is indeed the subject of my piece. Sorry I can’t share more.

Here’s a step by step image gallery of the workplace poster I finished up yesterday. It’s nice that the client I do these for does not mind that I share the final artwork as soon as it’s done. I often forget to post finished jobs because by the time they are published I have done several other jobs and it’s off my radar.

Job: Create 17 x 17 inch poster image depicting “four employees in a cafeteria, just finishing lunch. There are two women, one race-neutral and one black, and two men, both white. One of the two guys is chomping down on his last triple-triple burger and has destroyed several others, along with a huge plate of fries (just a few remain on the plate). The other guy has had a meatball grinder and a box of donuts, and he’s holding his stomach with a pained expression. The guys should be a bit on the chunky side, but not obese. Both are looking very logy, like after Thanksgiving dinner. The two women are cheery, upbeat and wide awake, looking at the guys and, in a funny way, offering constructive, ah, criticism in a humorous way (they shouldn’t look like nags). One of the women is just finishing a modest-sized bowl of salad, the other a veggie wrap.”

Here’s my initital pencil:

After a client review it was decided they wanted the ladies standing and looking like they wanted to be seated at the table but it would be covered with wrappers and discarded containers, half eaten food, etc. Here is the revised sketch:

This one was approved with direction to change the ladie’s expressions to be “less angry and more shocked/ disgusted”. On to the inks:

Pretty standard inks for this kind of job. As always I concentrate on line wieght and do not add much in the way of values via crosshatching or other techniques knowing the color will do all that work.

Here is the color in various stages of completion. See my coloring tutorials for details on this technique:

Here’s the final image. Click on it for a closer look:

B.B. King

B.B. King

A couple months ago I posted my caricature of Elton John that I drew as my entry for the August contest run by the National Caricaturist Network (NCN). Though there is a token prize offered to the winner, I think that should be just considered a bonus, as the real satisfaction is gained from taking on the challenge of drawing whomever is the subject for that month. For October, member Dave "Rock" Cowles came up with a rather intriguing subject dear to his heart: Legendary blues guitarist, B.B. King. I guess what I like best about this monthly contest is that it challenges me to draw somebody who I might not even think about caricaturing, as I usually gravitate towards either my personal favourite celebrities or somebody currently in the news.

Anyway, I quite enjoyed drawing B.B. King this month, though I must admit it was tough to work from what reference I could find. As I've mentioned often, I prefer to work from video as opposed to still photos. This was particularly important to me this time, as Mr. King is quite notable for his very extreme expressions as he plays. He has a rather endearingly comical face that is continually scrunched up and stretched out in his intense concentration, which makes for rich subject matter to capture in a caricature. Most of the still photos I found through a Google search really didn't help much in that regard, although I found them useful for some small details in the latter stage of my drawing, especially in approximating his guitar. Since I didn't have any video reference in my VHS or DVD collection, I ended up doing all of my rough sketching from viewing YouTube videos, as small in dimension and low res as they tend to be. Just for interest's sake, I'm including my pencil rough here along with the finished inked artwork.

Also, I think B.B. King must be seen in action to be fully appreciated, so here is a YouTube clip that I referred to, though not the one primarily used to achieve this caricature, which unfortunately cannot be embedded:

A Former Voter Is Rehabilitated
Every four years we hear the same crap from the two major party candidates. But the reality is if McCain wins, government is going to get bigger and more powerful. If Obama wins, government is going to get bigger and more powerful. "Conservative" radio hosts are going crazy over Obama’s "redistribution of wealth" comments, and showing concern for Obama’s supposed disrespect for the Constitution. So what if Obama wants to redistribute wealth. Republicans have been doing it for decades, just to different

Brian Biggs: Ten Trick-or-Treaters

From Brian Biggs’s blog:

Over the next week I’ll be posting ten trick-or-treaters here and on my Flickr page. They need names and maybe little descriptions. This is where you come in. In the comments section here and on my blog you can give each character a name, and tell his/her story.
The contest is being judged by Adam [Rex] himself, world-famous author Judy Sierra, and if I can talk them into it, my kids. The winner will receive a copy of the book that Judy wrote and I illustrated called BEASTLY RHYMES, signed by me and I’ll draw the winning character in it. There will likely be more prizes as well. Stuff like canned fish and M&Ms. I hope to announce the winners on Halloween, Friday October 31.

Animation backgrounds perfect for Halloween wallpaper

Animation backgrounds perfect for Halloween wallpaper

The Animation Backgrounds blog has been posting spooky-themed background recently, all of which make for the perfect Halloween wallpaper for your desktop. Shown here is, of course, a still from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, and there’s also some great pieces from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Fantasia’s Night on Bald Mountain, and the short Trick or Treat.

New Pepsi logo

New Pepsi logo

What do I think about the new Pepsi logo? Eh. Companies spend way too much time, effort, and money building up feelings about logos -- like decades and billions of dollars -- and then they just go and change it all. Of course the new logo and colors are similar to the old ones and it's variations on a theme but the new designs feel like someone's idea of what packaging is going to look like 10 years from now, an approach that never seems to work out well (see Back to the Future II). Coca-Cola had such success refreshing their brand with a simple take on their classic look and logo, why can't Pepsi do the same with this classic look?

"The Chestnut Tree"

"The Chestnut Tree"

I just happened upon this film yesterday when I saw it posted on the blog of Alan Cook, a talented recent Sheridan Animation grad and a former student of mine. I've watched this short animated film over again several times now and must say that I just love it. It was created by a young animator from Korea named Hyun-min Lee, who has been accepted into the internship program at Disney and has apparently been working with master animator, Eric Goldberg. An interview with Hyun-min may be found here.

The film is a celebration of childhood imagination and the loving mother who encouraged that imagination to flourish. Now, some of you may be wondering why I am responding so enthusiastically to this film, when I recently gave quite a critical drubbing to "Adventure Time", which also centers around childhood imagination. Especially since the characters in "The Chestnut Tree" are also quite simplistic in design, with minimal facial features and a comparable amount of what we refer to as "pencil mileage" as that found in the designs of "Adventure Time". But that is really where the similarity ends, and for me the success is in the execution of the visuals and resulting animation in this charming film.

Though undeniably minimalist designs, the young girl and her mother are drawn with fully dimensional, simple forms and they are handled with fluidity and graceful movement in their animation. Unlike the awkward character animation and layouts I perceive to be at work in "Adventure Time", the skill of Hyun-min's animation is able to lead the viewer's eye pleasingly and playfully through each scene. Though the facial features are so simple in design, they register clear emotions that the viewer easily can respond to. Admittedly, as one who teaches Character Design, I myself prefer to see characters that have more specific features that can indicate more of their personality type, but when minimalist design is handled well at the animation stage, that's where the personality and emotional content can be put across through clarity of body language, expressions and timing of the motion. (I can also appreciate "Pocoyo" for that reason, by the way.) Still, I do expect to see more distinctness in the designs from my Sheridan students just to stretch their ability to depict personality through visual design alone, as they can all well attest to at this point! :)

I hope that Hyun-Min lee is successful in her goal to become a full-time animator at Disney and I look forward to great things from this young lady in the future!

Web Censorship: The 10 Worst Countries To Blog From

Web Censorship: The 10 Worst Countries To Blog From

I am sure most of you guys take the freedom on the Internet for given. If you live in a western country, this is a consequence of being able to access any website and to publish anything you feel compelled to.

That is not the situation on all parts of the world, however. On some countries people can’t access basic websites like Hotmail or Wikipedia. On others, they can’t have blogs or create websites. On others yet, they can’t even own a computer with Internet access!

Over at DailyBits we did a compilation with the Top 10 Countries Censoring the Web.

Here is a quote from the 10th position, Pakistan:

The rundown

Pakistan started censoring the web in 2000, when the main target was anti-Islamic content. Over the time, it seems, they liked the possibility to control the Internet traffic, and have been increasing the scope of their censorship system ever since.

How does the censorship work?

There are only three international gateways on the country, and all of them are controlled by the Pakistan Telecommunication Company. The government, therefore, is able to monitor and block most unwanted traffic using filtering software (although their technical apparatus is not sophisticated).

Internet service providers are also required by law to monitor the activity of their clients to make sure that they are not accessing prohibited websites.

What kind of content is blocked?

In the first years of the web censorship in Pakistan, the main target was anti-Islamic content and websites that were related to political autonomy movements (e.g., the Balochi one). In 2003, however, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company declared that they would also officially block all pornographic websites.

In 2006 mainstream western websites, including Wikipedia and several newspapers, got blocked as well. The intensification of the censorship was propelled by the episode of the Danish cartoons that contained images of the Prophet Muhammad.

gapingvoid getting serious about the lithograph business

gapingvoid getting serious about the lithograph business

DEB_5381A.jpg
[Me working on "DesertManhattan". Photo courtesy of Deborah Smail.]

After a couple of years of thinking about it, I'm finally moving forward in the lithograph department. Here are some initial thoughts:

1. Yes, I've done lithographs before e.g for Techcrunch, Stormhoek and Microsoft. Those were done digitally, for high-numbered editions. This new effort will be much more high-end and exclusive. We're talking very small editions [say, 25 or so], done not via digital, but by old-fashioned etchings on metal plates.

2. We'll be using the highest-quality paper and inks we can find, bar none. We won't be sparing any expense.

3. The pieces will all be framed by hand, using highest-quality woods and mats. No industrial factory-framing for these babies etc.

4. As of today, I have no idea how much I'll charge for them. My plan is to put the first few ones onto Ebay, let people bid for them openly, and see what happens. I reckon this will establish a solid, relatively transparent market price, a lot better than mere guesswork ever could.

5. The size will be roughly the same as my recent large works on paper i.e. approx. 23x29 inches etc.

6. I haven't decided what image, or what style of image I want to use for the first run. Do I go with my familiar cartoon format say, something like this, or do I go with something a bit more "arty" say, something like "Fred 44"? This is a conversation I hope to be having with y'all over the next few weeks, so please feel free to leave a comment below, Thanks.

7. Yes. I am SERIOUSLY excited about this project. Rock on.

Isn’t that cute?

Flip To Go HD in Time for the Holidays

Flip To Go HD in Time for the Holidays

Shared by Robert Scoble

Damn, so many toys coming out that I want with no budget to buy them all.

Written by Adrian Covert.

Flip Video will release an HD pocket cam to its product line before the end of the year, according to a spokesperson for the digital camcorder company. Previously, it had mentioned an HD pocket cam was in development, but now there’s a firm release window to back that up. Flip has only offered scant details on the new product, however, so while we hope that the Flip HD will record video in 720p resolution, we’re not entirely that’s the case.

The Flip HD seems like a response to the well-received Kodak Zi6 digital camcorder, which also records 720p video and has a macro mode for shooting close-up objects. Despite the bump to HD, Flip is still committed to making web-friendly products; it noted over the summer, for example, that it was looking at ways to integrate HD-quality video with a web streaming infrastructure. Specific dates and pricing for the Flip HD are still unannounced, but should be available soon.

Flickr Guide: How to Do Everything with Flickr

Flickr Guide: How to Do Everything with Flickr

So what do you want to do on Flickr?

Q: I want to download all my photos from Flickr and burn them on to a DVD.

A: Get Flickr Down – it’s a tiny Windows utility that lets you download pictures from Flickr in bulk without requiring authentication. Mac and Linux users may try Flump.

Q: I want to use my Flickr account to bookmark all interesting pictures that I frequently encounter on the Internet.

A: Get the Flickr Uploadr addon for Firefox. It lets you post pictures from a web page directly to Flickr with a simple right-click.

Q: I know Flickr offers a search engine but it won’t display more than 24 pictures at a time. Is there a better alternative ?

A: Switch to either Compfight or PictureSandbox – these are some of best Flickr search tools on the web, even better than Flickr’s built-in search engine.

Q: How can I upload video clips to Flickr from the desktop. The Flick Uploader works only with images.

A: Flickr has already added video support to the Flickr Uploader but the tool hasn’t been released officially yet. You may however download the new Flickr Uploadr here – it supports video and images.

Q: I am looking for photos on Flickr that have shades of red. Does Flickr allow search by color ?

A: Flick doesn’t support color search yet but you may try MultiColr, Color Selectr or Colr Pickr – these are Flickr mashup that display photos from Flickr which match some particular color. The advantage with MultiColr is that it lets you look for multiple color tones in the same photo.

Related: Get Color Scheme Ideas With Kuler + Flickr

Q: I need pictures from Flickr for my school project that look like a sad or angry smiley face.

A: Go to Retrievr, draw a sketch of the smiley face and this tool will try to retrieve pictures that match your sketch. Could be a great option for searching pictures that cannot be described in words.

Q: I am worried that people may use my Flickr photos without attribution. How can I protect my Flickr images ?

A: You may consider adding text watermarks to your Flickr images. PicMarkr can do that for you or you use Picnic that’s built right inside Flickr.

Q: I need to embed a Flickr badge or a live slideshow on my website that will display my latest Flickr pictures. Any suggestions?

A: FlickrIn could be a good choice here – it’s available both in Flash and JavaScript format. Another option is FlickrSlidr.

Q: I want a Flickr Screensaver.

A: Get the Google Photos Screensaver (it comes free with Picasa 3). Go to screensaver option and attach your Flickr RSS feed to the screensaver.

Q: I want my desktop wallpaper background to show Flickr pictures.

A: Get the Switcher – this program will change your desktop background at periodic intervals taking pictures from Flickr – you can select pictures by user, tags, or just plain random so you never know what the next wallpaper would look like. Fleace is another option.

Q: Can I upload PowerPoint presentations on to Flickr as a set ?

A: Not directly but there’s a workaround – PowerPoint lets you export all slides as an image that can be uploaded to Flickr in one set (or use a common tag). While Google Docs or SlideShare are better places for sharing PowerPoint slides, you may still want to use Flickr as it will attract traffic from Image search engines like Google Images.

Q: OK, enough serious talk. I want to have some fun with Flickr photos.

A: Get CoolIris to browse Flickr pictures in a 3D wall. BigHugeLabs, PimpAmPum and Dumpr too offer a nice collection of Flickr toys for you to do fun stuff with Flickr pictures.
